Hello, welcome to the Learning to Lead show. I'm your host, Mark Cundiff, and this is episode number 59, where I provide some leadership insights from my conversation with Jonathan Milligan. That occurred in episode number 58, Consistency Beats Talent: The Secret Hiding in Plain Sight with Jonathan Milligan. If you have not heard that episode, I would highly encourage you to go back, take a listen at that. There were some great leadership insights during that conversation. I was pleased to get to interview Jonathan. He's been a mentor of mine for more than a decade. He's helped me learn how to set up a website, a blog. He taught me how to put together this podcast, how to get the equipment and get things lined out. So I owe a lot to Jonathan. During our conversation about leadership, entrepreneurship, focus, confidence, personal growth, and the power of consistency, we unpacked a lot of great insights for leaders to put into place. Jonathan is an author, speaker, coach, and the founder of Market Your Message. Jonathan has spent more than a decade helping people clarify their message, build businesses around their expertise, and make meaningful impact through their work. But his journey didn't begin in the entrepreneurship realm. He was a school teacher, and as a teacher, he was searching for a greater avenue to express his gifts and talents. He loves teaching, and that's what he does a lot of in his community. Throughout this conversation, Jonathan shares the lessons he learned while navigating career transitions, overcoming self-doubt, and building and simplifying businesses, and helping others discover their unique voice and develop their businesses. At the center of this conversation is a leadership principle that often goes overlooked: consistency beats talent. While many people chase the next breakthrough, the next opportunity, or the next big idea, lasting success is usually built through small actions repeated consistently over time. Here are five key takeaways for growth-minded leaders. Number one, you don't need certainty, you need the next step. Many leaders delay action because they want complete clarity before moving forward. Jonathan learned through his own career transitions that waiting for certainty often leads to paralysis. Instead, focus on identifying and taking the next right step. Progress creates clarity. Action creates momentum, and momentum creates confidence. Leadership lesson, great leaders don't wait until they can see the entire path. They focus on the next step and keep moving forward. Number two, clarity is kindness. I've never heard this expressed in this particular way. I love the way Jonathan unfolded this during our conversation, talking about as a leader, that if you are clear with your messaging, clear with your expectations, clear with the direction that you're going, clear with your vision, that this is kindness to yourself and to those who are a part of your tribe. One of Jonathan's most powerful leadership insights is very simple. Clarity is kindness. Confused leaders create confused followers. People perform better when they understand what is expected, why it matters, what success looks like, what they should do next. Leadership is not about having all the answers. It's about helping people see the path forward, being a guide, helping them move through the obstacles and the challenges in reaching the goals and objectives that you and your team have. The key leadership insight here is the clearer you become as a leader, the more effective your influence becomes. Listen to that again. The clearer you become as a leader, the more effective your influence becomes Number three, confidence is built through action. Many people believe confidence comes before action. Jonathan argues the opposite. Confidence is built by taking action despite fear and uncertainty. Fear doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. Often, it means you're doing something important. Fear thrives in big-picture thinking. Fear dies in small-step actions. Leadership lesson here is confidence grows through repetition, experience, and consistent action, not waiting until you feel ready. Number four, consistency beats talent. One of the central themes of this episode is that success is often far less glamorous than people imagine. While talent helps, consistency wins. Jonathan attributes much of his success not to extraordinary ability, but showing up repeatedly over time. Writing, teaching, creating, serving, learning, repeating, doing that over and over again You can argue that this is boring. I heard Craig Groeschel talk about that leadership is boring because leadership is being consistent, and it seems like such a simple, boring topic to say about consistency, to talk about consistency, but consistency is powerful. Success lives in the repetition between the big moments. What is the leadership insight here? People trust leaders they can depend on. Consistency builds credibility, influence, and trust. And number five, Jonathan's theme for his community is this: success happens in community. Despite all the emphasis on individual achievement, Jonathan believes growth accelerates when people are surrounded by the right community. The right people help you stay accountable, build confidence, gain perspective, celebrate wins, push through setbacks. Leadership can feel lonely, but it doesn't have to be. Our leadership insight is community doesn't just support growth, it multiplies it Those are my five insights from my conversation with Jonathan. He was my guest on episode number fifty-eight. It was an honor and a privilege to get to visit with him because he has poured so much into me and into my business and into my life that I just wanted you to experience hearing from him firsthand the things that he has learned over the years being an entrepreneur.
